Test Hyundai Veloster 1.6 TGDI 186 HP: Originality in pure state

Different, exotic and relatively comfortable to be a coupe, the Veloster is a rare-avis on our roads. A lot of equipment and a striking presentation are their hallmarks. In spite of its sporty design, neither the motor nor the behavior transmit the same, being more GT than GTI

Not everyone interested in a vehicle has the same needs. When purchasing a car multitude of factors are those that end up defining the purchase, and the price, aesthetics or brand image which usually have greater weight.

Although right now the economy does not rule for many whims, the truth is that there are a select part of users trying to search your new vehicle some differentiation, not opting for what you buy most of the population. Models such as the Kia Soul, Hyundai Veloster, DS 4, Honda Civic and Nissan Juke are clear examples of options that are out of the conventional in design issues.

Each in its species have more than enough arguments to capture the attention of customers the most exotic although the Nissan Juke, well-received by the public, in the end it is a very common vehicle on our roads.

Hyundai's offer is generally very conventional, offering cars and crossovers with a classic cut that meet the needs of the vast majority of users. This does not mean that for these alternative customers there is an interesting option as the Veloster tries to surprise the most daring with their forms.

For a little over a week I had the opportunity to share experiences with Veloster Turbo in no discreet orange matte and there have been many onlookers who have been looking forward to being a few who approached unashamedly asking features. The clearest conclusion I have been able to draw is that he is a true stranger, he likes and when they know a little more the product convinces.

DESIGN

Logically the success or failure of the Veloster is undoubtedly in its particular design. It is a coupe but unconventional use. In Hyundai, they thought that the coupe “almost perfect” would be that that wearing a dynamic image would not be uncomfortable in the day to day, something that has been achieved with its asymmetrical design.

If on the left side it has a very sporty look, with a door giving access to the driver generously sized, on the right side adds a second door that greatly facilitates things when entering the rear seats, being of the few Cars marketed in Europe to come up with a similar solution (along with the previous-generation Club man and the Nissan Cube, both with different designs depending on which side you look at).

Just over a year ago Hyundai made a small restyling to bring Veloster design the rest of the range. It premiered something larger front grille, rear lights with updated housings and other small details, achieving a more current and modern effect without losing the original essence.

That it is original has virtues and logically flaws. Not everyone likes. Its proportions are not assimilated at the first glance as in other alternatives and this has also slowed its diffusion in Europe. And I say Europe as in the United States, Australia and Canada is a commercial success.

INSIDE

The developments across the Hyundai family is also seen in the Second-Hand Hyundai Veloster. The plastics used convey a sense of quality and settings are good although being picky, it shows in small details that do not reach the level of an i30 perhaps keep in mind that an American public that is far less demanding in this respect.

Posture behind the wheel is comfortable. All controls are at hand although the center console has many buttons that get used . In spite of this, I did not find it to be more complicated than other alternatives. The instrumentation has a normal reading, with clear clocks and a somewhat small LCD in which the data of the trip computer are shown.

In a protagonist position it is located the screen of the navigation system and sound, clearly visible and does not require removing too much from the road . Tactile (but somewhat imprecise), I was surprised that to be able to visualize the outside temperature it is necessary to press a key since for space it could always be visible.

In the armrest of the driver are well-placed controls electric mirrors and windows, being curious that there are three buttons. It is the first time I see a similar solution and is that the third side door on the right side also has a traditional window, something that will greatly appreciate the passengers in the second row. Maybe you should learn DS with your “4”, a model also different from usual and that has fixed the glass of the rear doors.

Gaps available inside are sufficient and correct capacity. Under the central armrest there is a drawer suitable for storing the mobile and the wallet while the door bags and the main glove box are also usable.
